Per http://tc.labs.opera.com/apis/XMLHttpRequest/send/003.htm it seems  
this is indeed what Internet Explorer and Firefox do (assuming it's the  
same for all network errors). Ugh!

I suppose there's no reason to expect both of them want to change that to  
not throwing and doing it consistently with the async way?
