Fwd: [WebVTT] AW: Call for wide Review of WebVTT // Comments 2017-09-21

Hi everyone,

Andreas has also provided new comments on the new WebVTT spec and has
registered them all in GitHub, so please get involved in the
discussions there also.

Incidentally, these comments that have been registered are likely the
last requirements to be addressed before we can move the WebVTT spec
to the next level at the W3C in its standardisation path. So your help
in making this happen would be highly appreciated.

Cheers,
Silvia.

Dear Thierry, David,

Please find my comments for the syntax part in WebVTT and few other
areas in the following github issues:

#360 - Term "WebVTT cue settings list" defined twice [0]
#361 - Conformance Classes not complete [1]
#362 - Chapter location for defining WebVTT chapter title text [2]
#363 - Distinction between cue payload types [3]
#364 - Term definition with empty content [4]
#365 - Text color must be mandatory [5]

In general the spec has improved especially by providing more examples
and responding to comments by different reviewers. On the other hand
it is still very difficult to review the spec because of the
separation between data model, syntax, parsing and presentation.
Although as a reviewer you actually need to review all parts together
this is very time consuming. Especially for the parsing section you
need to implement the spec text (if only in a formal pseudo
algorithm). This is also a reason why I submit the comments so late
and for the incomplete coverage of the review (apologies for that).

Regarding the open issues: for most of them the group/editors need to
decide if a fix/update is needed. Outstanding is the comment on text
color. As commented in earlier discussions this is a critical
requirement for accessibility and needs to be addressed.

Best regards,

Andreas

Betreff: Call for wide Review of WebVTT

Dear All,

The W3C Timed Text Working Group has recently published a new working
draft of WebVTT: The Web Video Text Tracks Format [1].

The main use of WebVTT is for marking up external text track resources
in connection with the HTML <track> element. WebVTT files provide
captions or subtitles for video content, and also text video
descriptions [MAUR], chapters for content navigation, and more
generally any form of metadata that is time-aligned with audio or
video content.

The TTWG invites you to review this draft, and requests comments to be
received by 22 Sept 2017. These comments will be used to fulfill the
W3C Process [3] requirement for Wide Review of drafts, and Horizontal
Review [4] prior to publication as Candidate Recommendation.

If you wish to make comments regarding this document, please send them
to public-tt@w3.org <mailto:public-tt@w3.org?subject=%5BWebVTT%5B>
with [WebVTT] at the start of your email's subject. All comments are
welcome, however the scope of review will be mainly focused on the new
features introduced in WebVTT, since the First Public Working Draft
[5] on 13 November 2014 which triggered a first Wide Review .

A cumulative summary of all changes applied to this version since the
WebVTT First Public Working Draft is available for your convenience
