Yeah, this kind of doesn't make sense to me as well. I don't see many use cases for getCueAsHTML() being called if it's not being called for rendering subtitles. Furthermore, if the CSS boxes are cheaper and look exactly the same why not just have getCueAsHTML() return those?

That's true. This is probably something we can wait to see if users want.
