RE: [Raw Socket API]: Working on a version based on the Streams API

Hi Wonsuk and all,

I am currently working on the specification and plan to submit a new version of the TCP and UDP Socket API this week. In this version the TCPSocket interface is rewritten to be based on Streams. I will handle review comments and then continue with UDPSocket and TCPServer interfaces. I hope to have the complete specification reworked by the end of March.

For ongoing discussion see https://github.com/whatwg/streams/issues/64.

As I have mentioned before I am unfortunately not able to travel to the San Jose meeting in April but I will participate remotely in the session on the TCP and UDP Socket API.

As the name of the specification has been changed the link to the internal draft of it from the SysApps main page is now broken. Could that be fixed so it points at http://sysapps.github.io/tcp-udp-sockets/ instead?

Best regards
  Claes

Claes.
Thanks for status update!

As you know we will have a f2f meeting in San Jose at April. So It would be great if we could take a look at W3C styled draft of raw socket API aligned with stream API including issues we need to solve before the upcoming meeting. is it possible to you?

Kr, Wonsuk.

Hi Wonsuk and all,

The current status is that I am now ready to start the tangible update of the API based on the on the ongoing discussion at the WHAT WG Streams API Github page, issue: https://github.com/whatwg/streams/issues/64. My plan is to start with Interface TCPSocket and try to get that right before continuing with UDP and TCP server.

The major discussions on the rework of the Raw Socket API will probably happen at the Streams API Github page due to the tight coupling to Streams but I am happy for all your feedback. It is a bit complicated stuff but the goal is to achieve a lot of reuse by using the general Streams API functionality and also to provide added functionality compared to what the current Raw Socket API provides, for example piping streams.

Best regards
  Claes

Hi. Claes.
I think raw socket API spec is going forward to right direction! Could you update the progress for re-design work of raw socket API? It would be nice if you could share current issues on your work.
Thanks!

Kr, Wonsuk.

FYI,

I have started the re-design of the API and have an ongoing discussion at the WHAT WG Streams API Github repo, https://github.com/whatwg/streams/issues/64.

Currently there are two ongoing activities on a Streams API, the WHAT WG Streams API, https://github.com/whatwg/streams, and the W3C Streams API, https://dvcs.w3.org/hg/streams-api/raw-file/tip/Overview.htm. However, I was informed that there has been progress on convergence of the two specs. It seems as the base will be the WHATWG stuff but with some modifications from the W3C specification. This is why I have chosen to use the WHAT WG specification as the base for the Raw Socket API.
