Subject: RE: [SysApps Media Storage API]: Call for scope of functionality

Hi,

At the SysApps session at the latest TPAC meeting I expressed Sony’s interest in a MediaStorage API to access local media files on the device. There seemed to be an interest in the WG for such an API but it was requested that the use cases and scope of the API should be defined before we start working on the actual API. Therefore I sent the mail below but have so far not received any responses.

(Wonsuk) Sorry for late! ;-)

Sony’s main use cases for a Media Storage API are web Media Player and Album applications, which means that the full functional scope, listed below is needed. I attach a snapshot on a proposal that covers the functional scope below.

(Wonsuk) For your input, I will get back to you soon! I would like to encourage for members of the group to review this and share the opinions on the mailing list.

The security/permission issues with such an API are obvious. See section 4 in the attachment.

Questions/issues:

· The proposed MediaStorage API is included in the charter for SysApps as a phase 2 work item. According to our TPAC meeting the plan is to re-charter SysApps. However, are APIs applicable only for secure web runtimes for trusted, probably installed, web apps still in the scope for W3C standardization? Basically, will SysApps be re-chartered?

(Wonsuk) It’s a little bit complicated issue. So I couldn’t answer clearly now. Sorry for that.

· If SysApps is not re-chartered could a MediaStorage API have another home in W3C?

(Wonsuk) As you probably guess, we might try to put this to Webapps WG or DAP WG.

· Could the manner in which permission to use this API differs depending on the type of web runtime it is implemented in? For example, a web runtime for secure installed web applications may be able to open up this API so that no explicit user content is needed, while an implementation in a web browser may use a combination of web security mechanisms, such as secure transport (https:), content security policies (CSP) and a signed manifest, and user consent to open up the API.

(Wonsuk) This is the same question I have! Do we have any comment from members?

Note the W3C activities on Trust and permissions. For example, see <http://www.w3.org/2014/07/permissions/minutes.html> Workshop on trust and permissions for Web applications 34 September 2014, Paris, France and the proposed <http://www.w3.org/2014/11/trust-and-permissions-cg-charter.html> Community Group as well as <https://w3c.github.io/webappsec/specs/powerfulfeatures/> Requirements for Powerful Features. Also note the discussion on permission to access the TCP and UDP Socket API, https://github.com/sysapps/tcp-udp-sockets/issues/81 .

(Wonsuk) Thanks for information!

Any comment from anyone in the group?

Kr, Wonsuk.

I am happy for feedback.

Subject: [SysApps Media Storage API]: Call for scope of functionality

Hi,

This is a call for input on the functional scope a Media Storage API included in our present charter.

The presentation I showed at the Thursday TPAC session is attached in this mail: http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-sysapps/2014Oct/0055.html

The functional scope I propose are:

• Provide access to storage areas for media files, images, audio files and video files.

• Scan media file storage areas for added and deleted files.

• Obtain a filtered list of files stored in a selected storage area.

• Read metadata for a selected media file.

• Update metadata for a selected media file.

• Retrieve the file object for a named file.

• Add and delete media files

Best regards

  Claes

Clase!

I updated agenda [1]. Is it okay to you? Could you share the proposal for media storage API? I would like to put the link to the agenda for group members before the meeting.

Hi. Claes!

2014-10-25 1:02 GMT+09:00 Nilsson, Claes1 < <mailto:Claes1.Nilsson@sonymobile.com> Claes1.Nilsson@sonymobile.com<mailto: <mailto:Claes1.Nilsson@sonymobile.com> Claes1.Nilsson@sonymobile.com>>:
Hi SysApps,

A Media Storage API is on the SysApps charter as a phase 2 delivery item. Members of SysApps have shown an interest in this API as illustrated by the questionnaire performed in May, <http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-sysapps/2014May/0017.html> http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-sysapps/2014May/0017.html.

This type of API has high priority in Sony and I am currently editing a draft specification. We are also implementing the API in Chrome.

It sounds great! You mean you are prototyping this feature based on chromium open source. right?

I request a slot on the Media Storage API at the SysApps meeting at TPAC October 30-31. The goal is to get a view from SysApps members and other parties such as browser vendors on the interest for implementing a standardized Media Storage API for web applications.

Sure! I will make a slot for that!

As I have to leave at about 2-3 pm on Friday 31st I would like the slot on Media Storage to take place on Thursday or Friday before lunch.

Okay!

Kr, Wonsuk.

Best regards
  Claes
