Presentations: Ivan Herman

Dear all,

We agreed on our telecon yesterday that we should all introduce
ourselves on the mailing list. To be a good citizen, here I am...

My name is Ivan Herman, I am currently Semantic Web Activity lead at W3C
and also staff contact for this Interest Group. Prior to my current job
as SW Activity lead, I was head of the W3C Offices[1] and, as such, I
had the opportunity to make presentations, tutorials, assist at panels,
etc, on the Semantic Web many times. I have experienced the problems
around the messaging of Semantic Web myself... Also, as head of Offices,
I had a role in W3C Membership recruiting; explainining the values of
the Semantic Web (and other W3C technologies) to outsider companies was
therefore part of my duties as well. I hope that this SWEO IG will
greatly help in improving these problems, by providing use cases,
references to *real* (not only demo) applications of the SW technologies
in various types of areas, good guidelines for the development of slide
sets, tutorials, etc.

I also try to keep up my programming abilities with some hackings:-). I
have developed and I still maintain the system for presentations[2] and
translations[3]; both of these are RDF+SPARQL based (to have that, I
have created an early SPARQL implementation for Python's rdflib).

I maintain some resources that might be interesting for this group: a
series of 'core' presentations that I use for specific presentations
here and there[4]; I have recently finished a more complete FAQ for
SW[5] (comments welcome!). I have also collected references to tools[6]
and books[7] on our Wiki site (and the community has begun to discover it!).

On a more personal level: I am a mixture of Hungarian and French (ie,
grew up in Budapest, Hungary, in a partially French family). I graduated
as a hard core mathematician in Budapest in 1979 (I do not even
understand any more my first publication:-(, moved to Germany in 1986
where I worked at a small software house, and finally moved to Amsterdam
in 1988 where I still live. My public web page at W3C[8] and my private
site[9] give some more background if you are interested...

Ivan
