Re: Proposed editorial changes to the ARIA Graphics module

All,

I sent a word change to Amelia, but forgot to cc the group.

Thanks Fred, I like that edit.  Semantic text also includes the text
representation of the roles and structure, in addition to the
author-supplied title and desc content.

PS, did you want to copy that comment to the mailing list? You only sent it
to me.

I think a better choice of words is

Text-based presentations, such as screen readers, braille displays, and
text-only displays or printers. These technologies need to replace a
complex graphic with semantic text descriptions, while preserving any
meaningful structure and relationships between components.

  (replacing word alternative with semantic).

With my initial reading of the first line, I thought you were suggesting
the SVG element should have a title or aria-label that behaved like an
image alt text and be for the whole graphic because of the phrase
'alternative text descriptions'. I suggest replacing 'alternative' with
'semantic' which has a couple of benefits - first it is less likely to be
confused with alt text and second it introduces the idea that the
semantics of the graphics is what need to be relayed to the user.

While following up on Brian's suggested change to the Graphics roles
module, I identified a number of other editorial issues worth cleaning
  up.

I've compiled the changes in a pull request (
https://github.com/w3c/aria/pull/365).  Please take a look & if anyone
has any concerns we can discuss at the next SVG-A11y telcon.

  Best,
  Amelia
