Now hiring: postdoc to develop novel machine learning methods to learn metadata in large biomedical repositories

We are looking for a Postdoc for the Stanford Center for Expanded Data
Annotation and Retrieval (CEDAR) for an multi-year position with
possibility to advance to a staff-level position. CEDAR will develop
novel mechanisms to assist biomedical scientists with the intelligent
annotation, cataloging, and retrieval of experimental datasets.  This
postdoc will be responsible to develop machine learning methods to
learn metadata patterns from  existing metadata, from scientific
publications, and from related datasets. The post-doc will be involved
in developing advanced applications to power annotation and search
capability for the CEDAR repository.

Qualifications
The postdoc ideally has the following technical skills:

* Ph.D. with a strong background in bioinformatics, computational
biology, biostatistics, and genomics
* excellent communication skills and fully fluent spoken and written English
* strong problem-solving skills, creative thinking, and the ability to
build new software tools as needed are required
* familiarity with major machine learning tools, either expert in one
framework or able to work with multiple frameworks such as support
vector machines, Bayesian methods, regularized regression, decision
tree.
* proficient in R and/or perl, matlab, python
* extensive background in ontologies, knowledge engineering and representation
* familiarity with bioinformatics resources, i.e. human genome
databases such as Ensembl, UCSC genome browser, NCBI. Experience with
bioinformatics tools such as Bioconductor, BioPerl/BioJava considered
an asset

The postdoc will be embedded in the biomedical informatics group at
Stanford (http://bmir.stanford.edu/) and will interact intensely with
all the CEDAR investigators at Stanford and will also connect with the
collaborating groups at Yale and Oxford.
