I haven't (yet) ran a hangout where I did this but it is possible to take
questions via any chat app if you prefer to embed your live stream in a web
page.  People like Yifat Cohen (search Google Plus) do this all the time.
 The chat in the hangout (Google Talk) has worked for me before.  But you
do not need to capture the chat (from my point of view) if the host repeats
the question and it is captured in the video feed.
