Ah, I understand now. Yes, this would work in the sense that at least you wouldn't have to read whole pages again.

Yes, that's the problem. I can't really see how you could achieve this stability without either sorting, or writing the data to file.

I'm afraid that leaves us with "configure it on the client side" as the best option.
