I'm also a supporter for having a separate sub entity for awards that would
descent from schema.org/thing.

Additionally I believe that awards should definitely have a Date or Year
property. 

It seems that all types of awards always have a date assigned to them and it
is pretty much a defining factor to the award in overall.
