URIs and prefixes are distinct things. The conflation (as per usual) is 
the source of confusion.

RDF works without prefixes.

RDF based Linked Data works without prefixes.

URIs work without prefixes.

Prefixes make everything confusing to the newcomer.

We are trading aesthetic style for concept comprehension when we stuff 
prefixes into introductory examples. It's a premature optimization, in a 
nutshell.
