Indeed, we did not, we said we would use the normal markup stripping,
which, if you test it in Firefox, does indeed preserve the newline and
white space (try using the node.textContent value in the JS shell). So I
think you're correct.

I think it might be a good example of preserving that whitespace indeed.
I agree that we should change the SPARQL instead of the XHTML.
