------------------------------------------------------ International Conference on Semantics - Semantics 2006 ------------------------------------------------------ >From Visions to Applications - Semantics: The New Paradigm Shift in IT November 28 - 30, 2006 TechGate Vienna, Austria ---------------------- Introductory Statement ---------------------- Semantics 2006 is the first concentrated event in Europe focussing on applied aspects of semantic technologies. The event addresses researchers to contribute new research ideas, interesting applications, industrial adoption scenarios and visions in the Semantic Web domain. Besides the impact on the research community, Semantics 2006 aims to bring together researchers with industry representatives like Chief Level Executives, Project Managers, Software Vendors and Investors. The Semantic Web community aims to provide the theoretical background, technologies and applications for a universal medium for the exchange of data on a higher level than the normal Web with its human readable HTML pages, which are not meant for being processed by machines, and XML by considering additionally semantic information. Machine-readable data is a prerequisite to explore the rich amount of data on the web and generate added value, by mutually sharing and processing information by automated tools as well as by people. Semantic Web Services combine the advantages of the technologies of the Semantic Web with Web Services, i.e. knowledge can be reused across applications. Web Services offer functionalities of services to the Web accessible by every Web user. By the combination with Semantic Web technologies, additional automated tools can be provided, which offer functionality like automated Service Discovery and annotation of results of services with semantic information besides the core functionality of the services. Semantic Social Software is at the meeting point between Semantic Web technology, Social Software, and Knowledge Management. By enriching Social Software with Semantic Web technology, existing applications can be improved and new kinds of applications can be developed that offer richer kinds of collaboration, social networking, interconnection, and participation. In a sense, Semantic Social Software thus forms the heart of the proclaimed Web 2.0 development. Besides the scalable integration of heterogeneous data, many other interesting applications of the Semantic Web (Services) have been investigated and have been developed to products in the area of ehealth & life sciences, automotive industry, energy & sustainable ecology, media content industry and profiles. Semantics 2006 is a sequel of the Semantics 2005, which took place from 23rd to 25th of November 2005 at the Tech Gate Vienna and attracted 250 visitors. The annual event is organized by a consortium, consisting of the Austrian Computer Society, Digital Enterprise Research Institute, NIWA websolutions, profactor Steyr, Salzburg New Media Lab and the Semantic Web School. ------------------ Topics of interest ------------------ Researches, Chief Level Executives, Project Managers, Software Vendors and Investors are encouraged to submit papers to the following thematic areas, which is not meant to be an exhaustive list of themes: Scientific Papers: - Semantic Web + Layers of the Semantic Web such as Unicode and XML, RDF, Schema Languages, Transformation Languages, Logical Layer and Proof Languages + Technologies like reasoner, technologies for developing, refining, mapping, merging of ontologies and ontology-based data mining + Semantic Web Standards + Semantic Web Technology Products like Inference Engines, Ontology Transformation, RDF Databases and XML Databases - Semantic Web Services + Languages for Semantic Web Services like SWSL, WSMO, WSML, WSMX, IRS III, OWL-S and METEOR-S + Technologies for Semantics Web Services like grounding of Semantic Web Services, Service Invocation, Service Composition, Service Negotiation, Service Selection, Service Execution, Service Monitoring, Service Verification, Service Discovery, Service Mapping, Service Authorization and Service Encryption/Decryption + Semantic Web Services Standards - Semantic Social Software + Semantic Wikis and Weblogs + Community-Based Knowledge Acquisition, Evolution of Knowledge + Tools and Technologies for Collaborative Knowledge Creation and Management + Semantic Technology for supporting Collaboration between People and Enterprises, Collaboration in Virtual Enterprises, + Semantic Modelling of Social Networks + Tagging, Folksonomies, and Collaborative Ontology Engineering + "Social" Recommender Systems Application Papers: - Semantic Systems - Information and application integration - Searching and findability - Semantic social software - Ehealth & life sciences - Automotive industry - Energy & sustainable ecology - Media content industry - Multimedia semantics - Profiles Industry Papers: - Practical Scenarios & Show Cases - Innovative commercial software & business models - Novel applications - Research directions in industry - Experiences in applying recent research advances Submitted papers need to be of theoretical or conceptual nature along the natural sciences or social sciences domain. Papers aiming at commercial presentations of products and services won´t be accepted for the conference track. ---------- Submission ---------- Submissions must be original and must not have been submitted for publication elsewhere. Submissions should be formatted according to Springer LNCS (http://www.springer.com/sgw/cda/frontpage/0,11855,1-164-2-72376-0,00.html). For the camera-ready versions, we require the source files (tex or rtf). We intend to publish selected papers in the Springer LNCS series by Springer. Furthermore, we will provide local proceedings. --------------- Research Papers --------------- The number of pages of research papers should be between 8 and 15 pages including References and an optional Appendix. We can only accept electronic submissions in PDF format. Papers should be submitted electronically via the electronic Submission and Review System at the conference's site. ------------------ Application Papers ------------------ The number of pages of applications papers should be between 6 and 8 pages. Papers should be submitted electronically via the electronic Submission and Review System at the conference's site. --------------- Industry Papers --------------- The conference will include an industrial track for presentations on innovative commercial software related with the topics of the conference, which include novel applications, experiences in applying recent research advances to practical scenarios and innovations. For the industrial track, we require an extended abstract of 2 to 4 pages. The extended abstracts should be submitted electronically via the electronic Submission and Review System at the conference's site. --------------- Call for Panels --------------- Panels should address timely and, preferably, controversial issues and must be debate- oriented rather than series of short presentations. A proposal should include the topic title, a short statement about the importance and relevance of the panel, the potential issues of controversy, a tentative list of questions that will be posed to the panelists and a short bio of the panelist. Panel proposals must be submitted electronically to the Program Chairs of the Scientific Track by the deadline of the submission. ----------------- Call for Keynotes ----------------- A proposal should include the topic title, a short statement about the importance and relevance of the keynote, an outline of the presentation and a short bio of the presenter showing his expert knowledge by referred publications of the presenter. Keynote proposals must be submitted electronically to the Program Chairs of the Scientific Track by the deadline of the submission. --------------- Important Dates --------------- Deadline for paper submission: May 30, 2006 Notification of acceptance/rejection: August 8, 2006 Deadline for final paper submission: September 5, 2006 Conference: November 28 - 30, 2006 --------- Committee --------- Organizing Committee: Sven Groppe (DERI Innsbruck) Sven.Groppe@deri.org Georg Güntner (Salzburg NewMediaLab) gguentner@newmedialab.at Christine Haas (Österreichische Computer Gesellschaft) Christine.Haas@ocg.at Sigurd Harand (DERI Innsbruck) sigurd.harand@deri.org Eugen Mühlvenzl (Österreichische Computer Gesellschaft) mv@ocg.at Tassilo Pellegrini (Semantic Web School) t.pellegrini@semantic-web.at Alois Reitbauer (Profactor) Alois.Reitbauer@profactor.at Alexander Wahler (NIWA WEB Solutions) wahler@niwa.at Program Chairs Scientific Track: York Sure (Institut AIFB, Universität Karlsruhe) sure@aifb.uni-karlsruhe.de Sven Groppe (DERI Innsbruck) Sven.Groppe@deri.org Sebastian Schaffert (Salzburg Research) sebastian.schaffert@salzburgresearch.at Program Chairs Industry Track/Application Track: Andreas Blumauer (Semantic Web School) a.blumauer@semantic-web.at
