Christian, this was a deliberate decision, reached after considerable
discussion.  There were many opinions expressed but we finally decided that
leaving the range of weights to fall between -1000 and +1000 (and the decision
of whether or not to support negative weights left implementation-defined) was
a good compromise. 

I'm marking this bug INVALID and request that you mark it CLOSED.
