Hi Steve,

Don't know what you haven't thought of yet, but you might consider the following with respect to the mast compression post...

If the gravel is something we did, I'm thinking it might be expanded mica (vermiculite) which may have been mixed with resin to level off a low place on the top of the keel where the compression post sits.

If what is going on there is a problem requiring a solution, (eg, you think the base of the post is deteriorating) you might want to (and this is probably a lot more difficult to do than it is to write about), the next time you unstep your mast, clean out and dry out everything in the area, cut a couple of inches off the post and epoxy in some kind of inert, non-compressible spacer. That white plastic board material they sell in the boat stores might be good, although you have to use the (expensive) glue they sell to go with it.  (It's a greasy plastic and most glues will probably not bond with it very well.) A stainless steel plate might be good too. Then I would try to do something with the remaining portion of the post to seal it against moisture so you don't have to go thru this again.
