I've transferred this enhancement request to the bugzilla database at

http://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/show_bug.cgi?id=4962

Please use the bugzilla entry for any subsequent correspondence so that we
can track it.

I've entered it as a requirement on the serialization spec, since if we
decide to recognize this as a requirement then it lies in the serialization
space.

(Personally, though, I wouldn't hold out high hopes unless you can find a
stronger justification. I don't think that the requirements of people
processing XML without using a "real XML parser" come very high in W3C's
list of priorities.)

Subject: XSLT empty tag representation

I have found in my work that it is sometimes helpful to produce XML
output that is not always parsed by a real XML parser. Specifically, it
would
be helpful if I could have an XSLT processing instruction which would
represent empty tags as <tag></tag> instead of <tag />. I do not
believe such an instruction currently exists in any XSLT
specifications and thought you might consider it for future versions.
