oops, sorry (I should have known which spec it was in as I'd just
re-checked the definition before posting:-)

yes, but some comments you can only really make after you've _used_ the
spec for a while, and that has to follow the release of implementations,
so comes rather late. I've read every draft of all the xquery/xslt
documents but this didn't occur to me until I was trying to use this
function as part of the day job...
