The examples are:

fn:deep-equal($item1, $item2) returns false.

fn:deep-equal($item1, $item1) returns true .

fn:deep-equal(($item1, $item2), 2.3E0) returns false.

It is not clear why the result of the first example must be false as the
variables $item1 and $item2 are not defined.
