Re: [External Coordination] Time to promote epubcheck fundraising to our contacts!

Hello Jens,

You will find here the text I did propose as a press release to Livres Hebdo, the French magazine.

Please go for Germany ! You don’t need any approval.

Best regards,
Luc

Cordialement,
Luc Audrain
Co-président du W3C Publishing Business Group

Thanks everybody for the additional information. I will help Mario to write a press release that summarizes all the given information in a onepager for the German publishers/industry players.
Luc, could you be so kind and send me the French press release? I am sure you made a great summary and my French should be good enough to understand most of it. It would help me and Mario to create a German version as soon as possible.

So, I understand it’s okay for the BG and W3C if the German IG Digital (Börsenverein – association of booksellers and publishers and distributors) would make a press release asking the German industry to support epubcheck funding, correct? No need to get approval from any side?

Thanks
Jens

Thanks to both Tzviya and Luc for responding before I did. They are correct, Jens, they're the best people to get you the information you need. Thanks for doing what you're doing--it is VERY much appreciated!--Bill

Hi Jens,

Thank you for your involvement!

I hope I’ll be able to answer your questions. Luc and I have been overseeing the epubcheck work, so hopefully we can help if you have additional questions.

We have raised about $50,000. Our goal is $150,000.

We are leaving the fundraising open until we reach our goal. If an organization would prefer to make a payment in 2019, that is fine. It would be helpful to know about the commitment earlier even if the payment will not be made until 2019.

Luc recently published an article about the current status of the work at https://www.w3.org/blog/2018/10/epubcheck-revision-initialised/<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2Fblog%2F2018%2F10%2Fepubcheck-revision-initialised%2F&data=02%7C01%7CLAUDRAIN%40hachette-livre.fr%7C5041094b78a54be3ee6f08d63f5c38eb%7Cf881a2c50a89483181b1c7846c49594d%7C1%7C0%7C636766062657258321&sdata=aBWuON9w0%2FUKy0ClTkbe8lQSQ2Wy8kbZb8dJaV1MzYI%3D&reserved=0>. Hi Bill,

I have cc’d Mario Como from German “Börsenverein” who is also BG member. We have discussed the best way to distribute the fundraising information to the German publishers, booksellers and service providers to active them for the funding process. There’s a plan to involve the IG Digital (Interest Group Digital) and some other mailing lists and also some German industry magazines to help us getting some more attention.

Is there any information where the funding stands at the moment? Mario also asked me for a deadline where the funding process ends. I understood that the funding process may go until 2019.

Can you help me and Mario with some updates?

Again, I am wondering if we should create a more official press release information to have a paper that we can send to all industry magazines to get media coverage. Or will this work through the official mailout that you mentioned at the beginning of this thread?

Best,
Jens

Hi Bill,

Apologies for my delay. In order to simplify the communication towards the organisations that I want to approach, I was wondering if the there’s some kind of press release than can be used? Of course I agree with the idea of personal emails. But, to involve also local industry magazines & websites to spread then news, it would be very helpful to have an approved short official statement from the BG/WG that explains some background. I assume, that this could help to get coverage on industry websites and bloggers etc.

Just went through the minutes from yesterday’s BG call and could not find a specific information about this.

What do you think?

Jens

Hi Bill,

In Japan @Keio Manga to Magazines Work Shop.

Together with Yoshii-san, we will reach out to all the Japanese organizations as well as TDPF in Taiwan.

Questions:

1. I the fundraising page, the following fund investment criteria listed. What such different sponsor titles (such as “Leadership,” “Sustaining,”, etc. ) could make difference to the sponsors? Just the title credited on the webpage or anything else?
"We have selected DAISY’s proposal from a competitive selection process to update epubcheck. We anticipate a total sum of up to US$150,000 for the code work and maintenance that will be needed for this overhaul. Sponsors can join the effort for a contribution of $1,000 or more, with tiered support as follows:
• Leadership Sponsors: US$20,000 or more
• Sustaining Sponsors: US$15,000-19,999
• Supporting Sponsors: US$10,000-14,999
• Friend: US$5,000-9,999
• Helper: US$1,000-$4,999
• Or, whatever amount is good for you!”

TS: These are just titles. The steering committee reviewed and approved the text several times.

2. Any time-line requirement?
TS: We are releasing money to the developer team over several years, but the first 2 payments are due before the end of 2019. It would be ideal if we could raise at least 1/3 of the money before the end of 2018, and the remainder throughout 2019. About 1/3 of the money will be paid to the development team in early 2020, so it is acceptable but not ideal to collect some funds in 2020,

3. Transaction method details? (Wire-tansfer, check, etc.)
TS: This is detailed on the contributions form (https://inclusivepublishing.org/epubcheckdonate/<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Finclusivepublishing.org%2Fepubcheckdonate%2F&data=02%7C01%7CLAUDRAIN%40hachette-livre.fr%7C5041094b78a54be3ee6f08d63f5c38eb%7Cf881a2c50a89483181b1c7846c49594d%7C1%7C0%7C636766062657278326&sdata=RAy0BZgHWWCPllUC1GD2%2BJpvKNBd8knJbhNDOiSXKaY%3D&reserved=0>). There are several options, including wire transfer, credit card, and invoicing.

With such details, we will approach to the organizations.

Best,

Daihei

Hi, folks--

The website for soliciting support for epubcheck is now live. Here's the link:
https://www.w3.org/publishing/epubcheck_fundraising<https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2Fpublishing%2Fepubcheck_fundraising&data=02%7C01%7CLAUDRAIN%40hachette-livre.fr%7C5041094b78a54be3ee6f08d63f5c38eb%7Cf881a2c50a89483181b1c7846c49594d%7C1%7C0%7C636766062657288340&sdata=xFOKhKNwQmdVTumUY4MTyf%2BtCeDiBnvUC4HS0GCimRA%3D&reserved=0>

With the launch of the fundraising campaign, it's time for us to promote it to our contacts in the External Coordination Task Force as documented in our spreadsheet. PLUS, if you know of an organization that is not yet in our spreadsheet, but which you think might be a source of support, please add it to the spreadsheet and send the appeal to them as well.

This is such an important initiative that we will actually be taking two approaches. I will be drafting an email to be sent out from the Chairs of the Publishing Business Group to everybody on our list. That will be an "official" appeal to them to help publicize this with to their membership.

Where the External Coordination Task Force comes it is to do _personal_ appeals. The spreadsheet documents which of us have personal contacts and relationships with the listed organizations. So if you are one of the people who is designated as the contact person for one or more of the organizations, please send them a personal email, in your own words (and ideally reflecting your knowledge of the given organization) to stress how important an updated epubcheck is to their members, and to suggest how they might socialize the fundraising appeal among their members and encourage their members to contribute.

Just send the above link in your email. As you'll see, that not only makes the formal case for support but provides a link to a contribution form to facilitate the process of making the contribution.

Please copy me on those emails so I can accumulate a record of them. Thanks!
