Deprecation is a middle way between carrying it forward into ARIA 2.0 and removing it.

Everyone seems to agree that we need a better solution, including renewed work on the HTML drag and drop API, all of which is presumably material for ARIA 2.0. So, I can’t think of a strong reason for opposing the deprecation request at this point.
