For those who are having any irc trouble .. you can use W3C’s IRC html

Just type in your name and the channel (both input fields are labelled), 
then activate the “join” button.
You can type in using an edit field and you will see a log of all IRC 
messages and a list of all IRC users.
It is pretty basic, but it works if you are having issues with irc
