Re: The ARIA Personalization Task Force Teleconference - Monday 20th August 2018

Good afternoon,

I have to send regrets as I have a doctors appointment at this time. Below
is my present position on the discussion topic for this week, while
acknowledging that other members may be able to provide information that
informs me to change my position.

My preference would be that we extend the ARIA vocabulary or the semantics
become part of the HTML standard.

Reasoning:

   - "Normalizes" cognitive and other disabilities and gives ARIA a more
holistic use case. Currently the perception of ARIA is that it is used for
visual impairments. In my opinion it would be an "accessibility win" to
   think of ARIA more holistically.
   - Benefits of becoming part of the HTML standard - there is a broader
use case for personalization than accessibility. Businesses are always
looking for options to make the user experience more personalized,
   typically for increased ROI.
   - External libraries may be good for an initial POC or temporary
solution, however, concerns would be: maintenance, the expense of an
additional browser request, and security/privacy concerns. I also believe
this adds to the perception of accessibility as "optional"..

All the best,
Thaddeus
