Work in Progress on New Digital Publishing Interest Group Charter (Advance Notice)

Hello,

The W3C Advisory Committee received an advance notice today that a new
charter [1] for the Digital Publishing Interest Group [2] is under
development. The current Interest Group is contributing to this draft and
it is intended to replace the current IG charter [3] (due to expire on 1
September).

Since its launch in September 2013 the Interest Group has firmly
established the presence of the Digital Publishing Community within W3C
and, vice versa, the presence of W3C within the Digital Publishing
Community. Work started by that group in the area of Accessibility, Layout
& Styling, Pagination, and Content & Markup, is planned to be continued
and completed under this new charter. The results of the earlier
incarnation of this Interest Group will provide a strong basis for the
work of the new Interest Group.

In parallel, the group has also developed, together with experts of IDPF
and with comments from the Publishing Industry, a long term vision for
bringing Digital Publishing and the Web together. This vision has been
described in a White Paper [4], and is referred to as "EPUB+WEB". That
document also identifies a series of technical challenges on the Web that
should be solved to turn this vision into reality. The deliverables of the
newly chartered Interest Group include clarifying the technical
challenges, specifying those items that require cooperation with other W3C
activities to solve them, and (if necessary) drafting proposed charters
for W3C Working Groups to standardize specific items.

We would like to hear from a wide range of stakeholders to clarify the
mission and scope for the new Interest Group, the target topics and
industry priorities. Members and public are invited to send comments and
suggestions for changes to the team contacts, or submit issues through the
github issue list [5].

or Ralph Swick <swick@w3.org>.
