Re: A copyist's perspective

James,

I should be able to shed a light on the main topic of graphical or
generalized scores here with some of the material I will be presenting on
Friday.

Your email touches on so many different points at the same time and goes in
so many directions, a detailed written response on each point will probably
not be helpful to the group. We'll just be chasing our tails.

As I've said, this project of dealing with scores at a very general level
is going to unfold at a slower pace. I am asking for your patience in
allowing alternative proposals to emerge. It is clear that not everyone is
on board with using MIDI as the basis for such an approach, and we need to
look at a range of other ideas while thinking carefully about the goals.

Also, please stop worrying about the CWMN side, or about how its concerns
of measures, events, and whatnot will interfere with this project. We do
not have to unify everything in the world. CWMN can be CWMN, and this other
project can step back to a fundamental question: at the most general level,
how can we associate graphics with performances that unfold in time? This
will require some letting go and relaxation on everyone's part.

Best,
. . . . . ...Joe
