Postdoctoral Position in EU project on Semantic Physiological Modeling - Deadline 1 March 2013

The clinical evidence indicates that the number of people with all
levels of hearing impairment and hearing loss is rising mainly due to a
growing global population and longer life expectancies. Modeling the
inner ear and how it is affected by external factors is a powerful way
to diagnose and treat patients with hearing pathologies. The Digital
Enterprise Research Institute (DERI/NUIG) is a partner in the EU project
Sifem, geared at supporting physicians in understanding how to best
diagnose and treat such pathologies through a semantic infrastructure.

We currently have a post-doctoral research associate position open in
the creation of a Semantic Framework for Modeling the Inner Ear. If you
are a computer scientist looking for a real problem in an applied
domain, this is a great opportunity to engage and learn from domain
experts in the area of biomedical simulation! DERI is a leading research
institute in semantic technologies that offers a stimulating, dynamic
and multi-cultural research environment, excellent ties to
research-groups worldwide, close collaboration with industrial partners
and up-to-date infrastructure and resources.

Expertise Required

*	Knowledge about Linked Data and Semantic Web Technologies (RDF,
SPARQL, OWL), including experience with several frameworks and
architectures
*	A good understanding of biological/physiological models,
standards, databases, libraries and tools
*	Good technical skills in software integration, architectures and
development of application programming interfaces

* Project management and leadership in a technical environment

*	Good technical writing skills as shown by a strong publication
record

In Addition:

- Previous work with Finite Element Models and other type of
mathematical formalisms is a plus

- Familiarity with data/models in the Life Sciences domain (in
particularly the inner ear) is optimal but not required

Work Description

* Participate in requirements gathering from end users
(physicians and scientists involved in inner ear modelling) and
Architecture Design

* Identify (or develop) the appropriate semantic web tools for
particular problems in physiological modeling

* Data/Model extraction, alignment and semantic enrichment from
clinical sources

* Technical Project Management (e.g. interface with EU partners,
deliverable preparation and contribution)

* Dissemination through preparation of journals and conference
papers

We expect candidates to have a PhD degree in computer science or a
related discipline, have good programming skills and be fluent in
English. The position should be filled as soon as possible and is
available until the end of the Sifem project in February 2016. To apply:
please send 1) Cover Letter; 2) CV (with list of publications) and 3)
Name and Contact for 2 references to helena.deus@deri.org. NOTE: Mention
"Sifem PD DERI" in the subject.
