I like the analogy.  I've long argued that higher layers will facilitate
new use cases.

Each layer becomes richer and enables more, such as distributed apps.

It's perfectly possible to run dapps on ethereum, but I'd like to see how
they will fare at higher layers.

What for me is the magic sauce is the semantic layer of the web.  This
gives you an incredibly rich data layer, tied with the most widely deployed
protocol on the planet (http).

While I think inter ledger is an interesting new technology at layer 3, my
own thoughts are towards the solid project, which enables read and write
semantics on the web.

I think the efforts can be complementary.
