My point is that I proposed all this three years ago, and was told it was
impossible because of backwards compatibility concerns, which seemed (and still
seem) quite valid and compelling. If the idea was bad three years ago because
of compatibility concerns, why is it not bad now because of compatibility
concerns? I don't understand how it could have gotten _less_ bad. The content
that would have broken then is still there, and we've probably added an order
of magnitude more content since.
