This would be stupid to drop it for that reason, in that case, you would 
also drop class element because anyone could script the same way to add 
targent_blank with any class.

Now, you would then claim that the difference with class element is that 
this one is useful, well, rel="external" is useful, it's already used to 
signify the link leads to an external link with some CSS; this is not 
directly useful but it is indeed.
