Use Cases and Requirements for Adaptive Images

Dear HTML WG,

The Responsive Images CG has reached consensus on a preliminary set of Use Cases and Requirements for standardizing “responsive”/“adaptive” images (UC & Reqs) [1]. We would like to submit them to the HTML Working Group for comment and discussion. We will also be presenting these at the HTML WG meeting in Lyon, France on the 1st of November.

In putting together the UC & Reqs we have gathered feedback from the author community, CDN providers, and browser developers. We've tried to keep the use cases and requirements neutral in terms of proposed solutions; our goal with these documents is only to articulate some of the key problems we aim to solve.

As the W3C Process states: "A Candidate Recommendation is a document that W3C believes has been widely reviewed and satisfies the Working Group's technical requirements." Ultimately, we would like the UC & Reqs to be considered as the WG's Technical Requirements when the solution reaches CR.

Kind regards,
Marcos Caceres and Mat Marquis
