The next HTML+RDFa Heartbeat

The RDFa Working Group is preparing to release the first set of First
Public Working Drafts for RDFa 1.1 during April 2010. These drafts
include a number of new features that address concerns raised via the
HTML WG, WHAT WG, the Microformats Community and the RDFa Community. The
new features will be summarized when we release the FPWDs in a few weeks.

This e-mail outlines the rough plan for the next nine months concerning
the interplay between HTML+RDFa and the RDFa 1.1 documents.

At the moment, the basic time line is this:

* April 2010
   * RDFa Core 1.1 FPWD
   * XHTML+RDFa 1.1 FPWD
   * RDFa DOM API FPWD
* May 2010
   * HTML+RDFa switches it's base document from XHTML+RDFa to
     RDFa Core 1.1
   * RDFa Core 1.1 may absorb some content from HTML+RDFa
   * HTML+RDFa Heartbeat draft based on RDFa Core 1.1
* October 2010
   * RDFa Core 1.1 LC
* After October 2010
   * HTML+RDFa Last Call (depends on HTML5 Last Call)

We're going for a spec hierarchy that looks like this, with all of the
XYZ+RDFa specs being very "thin" documents that layer on top of RDFa
Core 1.1:

                  +--------- HTML+RDFa
                  +--------- SVG+RDFa
RDFa Core 1.1 ----+--------- EPUB+RDFa
                  +--------- ODF+RDFa
                  +--------- XHTML+RDFa

At the moment, it's not expected that RDFa WG/HTML WG would release
HTML+RDFa LC simultaneously with HTML5 LC. Coordination for simultaneous
release may be too difficult and is not necessary. So, the documents can
stay decoupled, which will hopefully help HTML5 progress without being
held up by RDFa.

If there are any questions, comments or concerns with this time line,
please let me know and I'll be happy to explain further or take an
action to address the concern in either HTML WG or RDFa WG.
