Although this is not directly related to the topic, I thought it may be
useful to understand what adding a role to an element does. The link below
is to a set of tests i conducted a while ago: it details what AT announce
when they encounter an element with a given role.

Note the  adding a role value provides the  user with the widget type and a
hint on what keys to use to operate it. (note the hint is typically only
provided when a user has their verbosity settings set to high).
