As it stands, Jaws and Window-Eyes are using and fully support @longdesc by announcing to the user that the image suggests a long description and the user can activate the corresponding link to get to the page where that description is provided.

NVDA doesn't (yet) and I haven't seen anything relating to @longdesc support in their roadmap, but it doesn't mean it will not get implemented eventually. This is not a complicated feature to add in.

As it turns out, Jaws and NVDA constitute the vast majority of screen readers used out there, so both supporting should be satisfying enough.
