They share a name, and a namespace, so in my book, they're the same  
attribute.

It's true that WAI-ARIA no longer normatively references the XHTML  
Role Attribute Module. I'm not entirely sure why this is, but it may  
be because it's expected that XHTML Role will only end up as a Note,  
and ARIA is aiming at being published as a Recommendation. (I don't  
think a Recommendation can normatively reference a Note.)
