What about backward compatibility?

What is different between <hr> and <separator>? How may browsers interpret it?
Why to delete <menu> and use <nl>? May I type my page for old and new browsers?
Why may I type XHTML - to forward compatibility? I prefer backward
compatibility with an old SGML parsers.
