just your opinion...

my opinion
the meaning of the page is changed when the image is taken away, that
can be easily verified by turning the images off.

Just as a sighted user could surmise from the presence of the painting
above the poem that there is a relationship between the painting and
the poem,
providing an informative text alternative can give the non sighted
user of the opportunity to make the connection. providing nothing
gives them nothing.

I understand your logic, it is just that you have chosen a very poor example.
