RFC 2396 v. RFC 3986 v. RFC 3987 (general comment, part of detailed review of spec)

We currently cite three specs that define URIs (RFCs 2396 and 3986)  
and IRIs (RFC 3987). Is there any reason to cite any of them except  
for RFC3987 (as URIs are a subset of IRIs)?
