Ratios algorithm continues beyond data (part of detailed review of common microsyntaxes)

Steps 6 and 12 both say "If there are still further characters in the  
string", and it would be useful to have a step after both that aborts  
the algorithm if there is no more data (as it stands it will always  
come to an end somewhere, just several steps beyond what is needed).
