That's precisely why microformats and Greasemonkey scripts have become so popular -- people don't need to wait for a spec to arrive, they can just go ahead and do it. That being said, microformats have lots of problems related to defining a strict parsing model and disambiguation, so a more systematic approach might be very helpful.
