I use the following procmail(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procmail )
rule to remove duplicates when I receive them:

#duplicates
:0 hW: msgid.lock 
| formail -D 8192 msgid.cache

I expect the functionality can be implemented in other ways,
but that's how I do it.
