Why do we need HTML5?

Posting in the "File Formats" blog:

  "What bothers me most is that the document doesn't say anything
  about why there should be an HTML 5 at all. What's the point
  without a specified goal?"

Seems like reasonable question to ask. Maybe worth considering
whether some text could be added to the HDP intro to make it clear
why there is a very real need for a new HTML spec.
