As a member of the microformats community I do use <time> for this in my hAtom.

If it's going to be made more generic might I suggest a new global attribute
instead of a new tag?  That way we can use it in these cases:

<a machineval="2010-01-01" href="...">2 minutes ago</a>

<dd machineval="2010-01-01">Wednesday</dd>

etc
