If webkit's behavior is implementation dependent enough that it's unlikely to
get specced and implemented cross browser, and if webkit further is reluctant
to change their implementation at all, there seems to be no hope of consistent
behavior cross browser.

In that case I'd rather leave things as is, spec-wise, and hope that
implementation converge with time.
