We're presently discussing adding roles to elements that they already have by
default, and I was specifically addressing the concern mentioned in comment 9
and comment 10.  I don't see how anything involving vanilla divs and spans is
relevant.  If you have a specific use-case for adding a role to an element that
it already has, beyond the one raised in comment 9, that would be helpful.
