http://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/show_bug.cgi?id=9805 Summary: Help with current pattern should not use the title attribute (4.10.7.2.8) Product: HTML WG Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Keywords: Disagree, externalComments Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: HTML5 spec (editor: Ian Hickson) AssignedTo: ian@hixie.ch ReportedBy: www.w3.org@mailfilter.com.ar QAContact: public-html-bugzilla@w3.org CC: mike@w3.org, public-html@w3.org Hi. I think the title attribute should not receive a special treatment to complement the pattern attribute, as in 4.10.7.2.8. Instead, a new attribute should be created with that particular meaning (e.g. "patterndesc"). Admitedly the title attribute provides advisory information about the element, which may sound similar, but to me it's different. For instance, a title attribute may help understand a complex concept about the field being entered by the user, while the pattern may be an obvious, secondary matter to her, the extra aid being only useful if the user makes a mistake. Consider the following example: <label> ISBN: <input pattern="[0-9]{3}-[0-9]-[0-9]{2}-[0-9]{6}-[0-9]" name="isbn" title="The ISBN is the unique code that identifies your book and edition; look for it at your book's cover or back." patterndesc="a series of numbers and dashes, as written on the book." /> </label> Sorry if this is irrelevant or out of place.
