+1, fwiw.  Cargo-culting is a real bother here, causing completely redundant
markup to be sent over the wire for no reason, and increasing the workload for
well-meaning authors who just misunderstood how the default roles work.

Better to make it a full-on validation error, so that people know for sure that
what they're doing isn't necessary.

At the very least, it should be something requiring a validator to emit a
warning.
