But specified values may not be the same thing as a grammar AST. In fact, so far they have just needed to be a something you could produce from a string and serialize to a string (and even this last may not be true for shorthands). I feel like there are assumptions being made here about what a "specified value" is that are not being spelled out and may well not match what implementations actually do.
