EU ISA Programme Core Vocabulary on Location

Dear all,

I want to let you know about some location work that the W3C Team is
involved with that's being carried out under an EU project called SEMIC,
part of the much bigger ISA Programme. The most recent newsletter is
probably the quickest/shortest backgrounder I can offer [1]

The reason for specifically notifying the POI and GeoLoc WGs is that
we're working on some core vocabularies, one of which is for location.
It's more about locating things like people and businesses (i.e.
addresses) than more abstract notions like land parcels and certainly
not about moving objects, but, however the SEMIC Core Vocabularies WG
defines the idea of location, it will be interoperable - indeed will use
terms directly taken from - things like INSPIRE. Although I'm
coordinating the WG, the specific work on location is being lead by
folks at the Institute for Environment and Sustainability, part of the
JRC which in turn is part of the European Commission (sorry for all the
acronyms) - i.e. the people coordinating the work on INSPIRE. The WG
includes people working on ISO/TC211 too.

Why might you care?

Because the community around the POI and GeoLoc WGs comprises potential
users of public sector information that refers to location and so we're
keen to do it right and produce something that's actually useful.
Although the outcome of the work won't be legally binding, it will be
endorsed by the EU Member States and is likely to be used extensively.

That said, I don't want to fill up the mailing lists with stuff that may
not be of direct interest so I'll leave it there for now and say that if
this kind of activity is what you're most concerned with and you want to
know more, please get in touch.

Thanks

Phil.
