I think this is what the section you reference tries to define with:

> If fill references a paint server, then the coordinate space of the paint server is the coordinate space defined for the filtered object.

Which I interpret as "setup the paintserver (as if) for the filtered object and paint with it like that", which is why the origin is in the same location as it would be for the filtered object. This area could certainly use more testing though...

I suspect your first test could be made clearer by not using 'white' as one of the stop colors (or at least have a contrasting background). (The blur doesn't really help either I think.)
