I wrote up a proposal as part of the Transformation Module wiki page at http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/Forms/wiki/The_XForms_Transform_Function_Module#The_Extended_transform.28.29_Function_.28proposal.29

This might help eliminate the need to have a second function by defining the appropriate system parameters.
